If it’s GOYA it has to be…Typhoid fever?!?

So maybe you drank a mamey batido from the fruit stand in your neighborhood or pulled that pack out of your freezer last night and had some and now you might get Typhoid fever!?!? If you haven’t heard about the recall, keep reading, but first some warning signs for those mamey lovers out there who have already had some in the last few days.

What symptoms should you look for?

  • Typhoid fever is a serious illness that can result in death.
  • People with typhoid fever usually have a sustained fever as high as 103 degrees to 104 degrees F (39 degrees to 40 degrees C).
  • They may also feel weak, or have stomach pains, headache, or loss of appetite.
  • The only way to know for sure if an illness is typhoid fever is to have samples of stool or blood tested for the presence of Salmonella Typhi.

If you think you have typhoid fever hurry to the hospital.

Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to consumers not to eat frozen mamey fruit pulp sold under the La Nuestra brand by Montalvan Sales Inc. Ontario, Calif., or the Goya brand by Goya Foods Inc. Secaucus, N.J.

The following is from the FDA news release: An investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state partners showed an epidemiologic link between an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella Typhi infections and the products. The two companies get their mamey fruit from a common supplier in Guatemala.

The CDC reports that at least nine people in California and Nevada are ill with typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella Typhi. Ill individuals have reported consuming mamey fruit pulp, including mamey fruit smoothies at juice stands.

Goya Foods Inc. and La Nuestra have voluntarily recalled the product.

Consumers who have the recalled La Nuestra brand or Goya brand frozen mamey pulp in their homes are urged to discard it immediately. Consumers also are urged to find out what brand of mamey pulp is being used in drinks prepared at juice stands and stores. This outbreak of Salmonella Typhi is not related to the current outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis linked to eggs in their shells.

What Do the Products Look Like? (Click below for pictures and more)

Both the Goya and La Nuestra products are sold frozen. The Goya product is sold in 14-ounce packages in retail stores nationwide. All production lot codes are being recalled. The UPC is 041331090803.

The La Nuestra brand mamey pulp comes in a 14-ounce plastic package. All lot numbers are affected by this recall; however, packages produced prior to May 2009 are not identified with a lot number and are subject to this recall as well. The UPC is 7-56869-10008-4.

FELIZ CUMPLE DORA!

Can you believe its been ten years? Nickelodeon celebrates the landmark 10th anniversary of the world’s most beloved Latina heroine, Dora the Explorer, with a brand-new, hour-long primetime TV movie, “Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure,” premiering Sunday, Aug. 15, at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon, according to a company press release. Following the TV movie, at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT), Nickelodeon will premiere the first-ever Dora 10th Anniversary documentary, a special 12-minute tribute executive-produced by Academy Award – nominated Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture) and directed by Debra Eisenstadt.

The animated series is now broadcast in more than 100 countries — it’s the No. 1-rated preschool show in many of them, including France — and dubbed in 30 languages, such as Russian, Mandarin and German, with Dora mostly teaching English (in some cases Spanish), according to the LA Times.

“What’s been innovative about the show is it wasn’t conceptualized or presented as a Latino-themed show,” said Chon Noriega, director of UCLA’s Chicano Studies Research Center. “It was an educational series for kids that happened to have a Latino girl as the lead character. And it didn’t shy away from having a character that spoke Spanish. That allowed it to do something that was very unique,” according to the LA Times.

To celebrate the occasion, you can but the “We Did It!” Dora doll (on the left), retails for $39.99.

The original Dora doll sang the “We Did It” song and swayed back and forth to the music and the new doll moves her arms, swings her long hair and swivels her body to the beat as she teaches kids the steps to her signature dance and engages them with four modes of interactive play: Teach-Me (where Dora teaches kids the “We Did It!” Dance), “We Did It!” Dance, Freeze Dance, and Say It Two Ways bilingual dance game.

Safer Sex for All after Counterfeit Condom Crook is Sentenced

Am I counterfeit?

HIV is the health problem with the largest racial disparity; 80% of new AIDS diagnoses and deaths are among African Americans and Hispanics. Jimmy Wang didn’t help the situation by distributing more than a million COUNTERFEIT CONDOMS in the New York City area!

Wang, a U.S. immigrant from China was sentenced today to 37 months in prison for trafficking in more than a million counterfeit Trojan condoms, according to Bloomberg News. Condoms tested from the same batch as Wang’s were found to burst, leak and lack spermicide, prosecutors said. The brands seized according to court papers were:

  • Trojan Magnum
  • Trojan-ENZ
  • Trojan Ultra Ribbed
  • Trojan Mint Tingle (is mint tingle really such a large market that it’s worth counterfeiting?)

“This defendant rather callously, in exchange for money, was willing to put a lot of people at high risk” for serious diseases such as HIV, the retrovirus that causes AIDS, the judge said, according to the Bloomberg article.

“To the best of our knowledge, the counterfeit condoms are no longer available for sale,” Geoffrey Potter, a lawyer for Church & Dwight at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP in New York, told the judge today. “We have not for a very long time received any reports or consumer complaints about counterfeit condoms nor have we found any on store shelves. But there is still a need to deter and to punish.”

One question: How do you know if you have counterfeit condom?

Here’s more from today’s Bloomberg article:
The condoms were imported from China by ZX Trading Corp., a sham company in Queens, New York, used by the ring to evade U.S. customs officials, prosecutors said.

Wang pleaded guilty on Nov. 17 to trafficking in counterfeit goods. He is the first defendant in the case to be sentenced. All pleaded guilty except Jian Zhong Hu, also known as Andy, who remains a fugitive in China.

Church & Dwight cooperated with the government in its investigation and conducted a separate probe that resulted in the seizure of more than 4.3 million fake condoms, the company said in court papers.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Call me daddy (via Twitter & Facebook)!

Cristiano Ronaldo announced Saturday night via Twitter and Facebook that he’s a daddy! Even though it was a disappointing end to the World Cup for the Portugal forward, this is definitely good news.

“It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy. As agreed with the baby’s mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship. No further information will be provided on this subject and I request everyone to fully respe…ct my right to privacy (and that of the child) at least on issues as personal as these are.

The baby’s mother is American and Ronaldo spent time in both Miami and Los Angles during 2009.

Twitter is becoming a popular mode of communicating big announcements. Paulina Rubio announced her pregnancy via Twitter and Ricky Martin also came out of the closet via Twitter.

NYC Latinos Dicen NO to Mosque Near WTC Site

That’s right, according to a Quinnipiac University poll, sixty percent of Latinos in NYC oppose efforts to build a Mosque near the World Trade Center site. That’s more than the 56 percent among whites and 45 percent among blacks who are opposed to the Mosque and cultural center.

According to the study: Fifty-six percent of New York City voters, including 58 percent of whites, 50 percent of blacks and 48 percent of Hispanics, say they personally know a Muslim. A total of 52 percent say they understand Islam “very well” or “fairly well,” while 45 percent say “not very well.”

From June 21 – 28, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,183 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.

Why do you think Latinos are the most opposed to the construction?

Are new Sunshine State Latino License Plates a Political Trick?

In April of this year, the then Republican Governor of Florida Charlie Crist announced his intention to run for the United States Senate. Although he had been the stronghold of the Republican party’s presence in the Sunshine State, support from the GOP for the November elections seemed uncertain. On May 29, Governor Crist announced that he was going to run for the U.S. Senate as an independent.
On the other hand, the former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio has been endorsed by some of the most influential members of the Republican Party. As of today, Rubio has received the support of Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Mike Huckabee, Dick Cheney and Mitt Romney. Rubio not only has the support of the most prominent figures in the GOP, but also the support of one of the most politically influential groups in Florida: Cuban Americans.

While the vote of Cuban Americans from South Florida has been pivotal in deciding the outcomes of past elections in the state, the Hispanic support for this year’s Senate elections seems to be less clear. It is possible to argue that Marco Rubio’s background (Cuban American guy with an excellent command of the Spanish language and a conspicuous Hispanic last name) may be appealing to the almost 4 million Hispanics that reside in Florida. However, the Hispanic vote is up for grabs.

On June 22, Gov. Crist signed House Bill 971 that creates the first Hispanic-themed license plate. This initiative is aimed at celebrating Hispanic contributions to the Sunshine State and its proceeds will be destined to help non-profit organizations that benefit Hispanics and other minorities in the State of Florida. Is this an honest and genuine gesture of Gov. Crist to the Hispanic population of the Sunshine State or is this one more trick to win the vote of such influential demographic?

What do you think?

Chipotle feeds kids with spam (the e-mail kind)

There is a Chipotle and a Qdoba both within a couple blocks of our office and a Baja Fresh a few more blocks away and we’ve gone to all three. This post isn’t about Mexican food reviews though because we wanted to share a fun program that Chipolte is doing to help kids eat healthy and all you have to do to help is forward your spam e-mails to nojunk@chipotlejunk.com. Unfortunately, we all get spam, but now we can do something with it besides deleting it.

For every 100,000 junk emails received (up to a 500,000 maximum), Chipotle will donate $10,000 to The Lunch Box, a new initiative from the F3: Food Family Farming Foundation that will offer 100,000 schools nationwide (32 million children) recipes and other tools for implementing healthy and economical meal programs, according to this article. That’s about all the info you need. Read more on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/chipotle.

Videdo: Behind-the-Scenes with Chiles & Chocolate

Our team loves to go out to eat at Chiles & Chocolate in Park Slope, Brooklyn. They have great authentic Mexican food from the state of Oaxaca in a nice location with a friendly staff.  During the summer here in NYC, you can spot Chiles & Chocolate at many of the local festivals throughout the City with great tamales, taquitos, empanadas and so much more! That’s why we were happy to accept their invite to go behind-the-scenes and help staff their booth during a recent NYC festival. We made a video of the day and wanted to share the experience with you. We had a lot of fun, but think we should probably stick to producing Dos Lives instead as their team was much faster and prepared than we were. :-)

You can check out their booth this Sunday at the 7th avenue fair in Park Slope Brooklyn or visit their Facebook page for restaurant information. Thanks again for a great day!

New York City MTA Misleads Straphangers (subway riders)

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) effort to change service backfires, leaving riders waiting for trains that won’t arrive for two weeks.

Jon Byington/DosLives.com

The MTA is reducing subway service here in NYC starting June 27, and they’ve already starting replacing the black information signs that hang above the subway platforms with updated train information. The only problem is that those changes don’t take effect for another two weeks and there are no service advisories on the platforms advising riders that the information is incorrect. #FAIL.

I was waiting at the 36th avenue station in Astoria Queens this weekend with a friend headed toward Manhattan and the sign said the Q train stopped at the station. We decided to wait for the Q which would take my friend to her stop in Brooklyn without having to transfer which is always a wonderful thing in NYC. We waited and waited while several trains passed and finally asked the conductor where the Q was.  She laughed and said “They put those signs up way too early. The Q won’t start running at this station until the end of the month.”

Good thing we asked and were sitting near the conductor car. There are a lot of people who wouldn’t ask for a variety of reasons including limited ability in English and may have waited much longer for a train that won’t stop for two more weeks! Will the MTA post service advisories on the platforms of these stations? We sure hope so.

FYI – Latinos make up 19.1% of subway riders according to a 2009 study.

Among other service changes, the “V” is now the “M” train so many subway signs now say “FML” where the F, M and L trains all stop, haha.

New Yorkers – leave a comment and let us know what you’re thinking. How do you feel about your local subway, bus or commuter rail system? Let us know.

Video: Starving for Immigration Reform

Julio Valeriano explains how a group of young people are demanding change as they battle for comprehensive immigration reform.

21 year old Osmán Canales is one of about 10 people who has had enough of the government’s foot dragging on immigration reform.  Last week Canales and fellow members of the New York State Youth Leadership Council began a hunger strike outside democratic Senator Charles Schumer’s Manhattan office. They’re demanding Schumer move the Dream Act forward as a stand-alone bill.

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act or DREAM Act, would grant children of illegal immigrants who’ve graduated high school and finished two years of college, the opportunity to apply for citizenship, and get a higher education.

Read more about the campaign below:

Schumer, Chairman of the Senate Immigration subcommittee, co-sponsored the legislation to allow immigrant young people who were brought to the U.S. as kids, to apply for citizenship.

But the students say Schumer hasn’t done much to move the bill forward. He did mention the possibility of a congressional hearing on the Dream Act, but then dropped the ball. Schumer has refused to sit down with the students.

The strikers, most of them brought to the U.S. as kids, set up camp on Schumer’s doorstep begging him to push for passage of the Dream Act.

Through his staff, Schumer offered June 18 for a meeting, but the protesters set a deadline of today at Noon and ended the hunger strike after the deadline passed.
What do you think? Should the young people have continued their hunger strike and pushed for Schumer to introduce The Dream Act as a stand-alone bill?

Or should they just drop it?

Furthermore, should these young folks starve at Senator Schumer’s, or anybody’s doorstep, to get immigration reform?
