President Hugo Chavez Takes More Control
Surprise Surprise…President Hugo Chavez has ordered the navy on Sunday to seize seaports in states with major petroleum-exporting installations. These installations just happen to be in states governed by political rivals who were elected during regional elections last year.
You’ll remember that last year, Venezuelans approved a measure that abolished his term limits. Recently, the government announced the nationalization of an Irish-owned eucalyptus-tree plantation (Happy St. Patrick’s Day!) and a rice plant controlled by an American agricultural company. Chavez supports a bill that would shift control of seaports, airports and highways from states to the central government. The New York Times has the full story.
