Hispanic Latino1 300x160 Meet the Latina who made the word ‘Hispanic’ official Dos Lives explores ‘Latino’ life here in the U.S.,  and not ‘Hispanic’ life according to the graphic at the top of our site, but we’d still like to know who made the word ‘Hispanic’ official. It’s not who you think. Meet Grace Flores-Hughes, the Hispanic bureaucrat who helped establish “Hispanic” as the government’s word of choice for people of Spanish origin.

In this Washing Post article, she also shares her opinion on the Hispanic vs. Latino debate and what she thinks of Sonia Sotomayor.

Anyone out there prefer Hispanic? Comments are now open to all Latinos, Hispanics, and everyone else.

It’s very difficult to figure out what to call each other. I’ve read a lot of articles and sometimes mainstream media refer “us” as Hispanics. However, during regular convo, I hear Latinos.

It also depends on your country of origin. A Spanish (yes SPANISH) person who was raised in Cuba and now lives in Florida told me he prefers Hispanic. Ask a Puerto Rican in New York, I’m sure they will say Latino.

    *sigh*
