Many Chileans here in the U.S. have been up through the night working to did not go to bed Friday night as they have been working through the night trying to contact loved ones in Chile. A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck south central Chile early Saturday, collapsing both buildings and roads and at least 78 people have been killed according to Chilean State Television. President Michele Bachelet declared a “state of catastrophe” and many people are missing.
Additionally, a 7.3 magnitude quake struck Japan this morning. Tsunami warnings were issued over a wide area, including Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Antarctica and Australia. Dos Lives has been unable to contact our team members in Chile because phone lines and electricity is out in many areas. Many Chileans are utilizing social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to try to get word from loved ones.

The epicenter was just 70 miles from Concepcion, Chile’s second-largest city or about 200 miles southwest of country’s capital of Santiago. A 9.5 earthquake struck Chile in 1960 and killed 2000 people.
