Video: K Dice La Calle – Your opinion on the Mosque near Ground Zero

This week’s edition of K Dice La Calle: Our team takes to the streets of Spanish Harlem in NYC and asked residents their opinion on the Mosque controversy at Ground Zero.  Earlier this year, a Quinnipiac University poll found that  sixty percent of Latinos in NYC opposed efforts to build a Mosque near the World Trade Center site. That’s more than the 56 percent among whites and 45 percent among blacks who are opposed to the Mosque and cultural center. Have those percentages changed?

Are you in favor or opposed to the construction of the mosque/Islamic Cultural Center?

I’m a Latina and I’m not opposed to the mosque at all. Honestly, I think it’s needed especially, since this surge in racism we’re seeing now. I think I have an explanation as to why Latinos are opposed to the mosque. I’ve noticed that Latinos today are being targeted by Christian conservatives who are mostly responsible for this Muslim backlash. Have you watched preachers like John Hagee, Rod Parsley, and the countless others who have messages riddled with anti-Islamic sentiment? Sadly, they’ve been branching out beyond their white audiences and now offering their services and television programs in Espanol. I think we have yet to see the damage that’s going to be done to the Latino community if this isn’t countered. We need unity and not division, if we’re going to survive
