Cinco de Mayo Celebrates: Carlos Slim Helú

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, it is a holiday that commemorates the Mexican’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It has been said that “The Puebla victory came to symbolize unity and pride for what seemed like a Mexican David defeating a French Goliath.”

Today, there are Mexican descendants that have made impressive imprints in American culture and we are happy to honor their achievements on a day that we are no doubt very proud of, so grab your margaritas and yell out loud “Que Viva Mexico.”

Carlos Slim Helú was born in Mexico City and has been proclaimed the world’s richest man by Forbes Magazine. He is the chairman and CEO of telecommunications companies Telmex and America Movil. Mr. Slim also owns large stakes in other companies, including the retailer Saks and The New York Times Company. His corporate holdings as of February 2011 have been estimated at 74 Billion, these estimates have placed him as the wealthiest man out-beating Bill Gates and Warren Buffet and making him the first Mexican to top the list and is also the first person at the top that is from an “emerging economy.”
