Cinco de Mayo Celebrates: Kate Del Castillo

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, it is a holiday that commemorates the Mexican’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It has been said that “The Puebla victory came to symbolize unity and pride for what seemed like a Mexican David defeating a French Goliath.” Today, there are Mexican descendants that have made impressive imprints in American culture and we are happy to honor their achievements on a day that we are no doubt very proud of, so grab your margaritas and yell out loud “Que Viva Mexico.” Kate Del Castillo is playing the coveted lead role of “La Reina del Sur” a smash hit telenovela airing on Telemundo. In its debut week it drew in more than 8.1 Million viewers making it the most successful novela premiere week ever. It ranked number one in its airtime beating out all English-language networks. You may also remember her from her appearance in HBO’s Weeds where she plays the role of Pilar a Mexican, powerful, wealthy, classy, and evil woman. In an interview they asked her what was the most fun thing about working on weeds and she said “ I loved getting to say those very bad words in Spanish: PINCHE GRINGA PUTA… honestly, I mean c’mon, only in WEEDS!”
