980 Police Officers in Veracruz, Mexico Fired after Failing Lie Detector, Tests

The Mexican government has fired 980 police officers during the last few weeks in the gulf state of Veracruz who have failed lie detector and other tests, according to an Associated Press report.

The news was announced Tuesday by Veracruz Police Chief Arturo Bermudez who said only 27 percent of the 6,000-member police force have taken the tests. The agency is attempting to get rid of corruption in a state that has experienced an increase in violence since mid-2011. The chief also said he plans on raising the salary of police officers to maintain a smarter police force that isbetter prepared, according to a El Universal report

Sixty-seven people have died in two recent mass killings apparently linked to the Sinaloa cartel targeting the Zetas cartel, the Associated Press article states. Mexican President Felipe Calderon has sent troops and federal police to Veracruz.
