New York City Dominican ‘Lone Wolf’ Terrorist, Jose Pimentel, 27, Arrested

New York City Dominican ‘Lone Wolf’ Terrorist, Jose Pimentel, 27, Arrested

New York City officials announced Sunday night that they had arrested a U.S. Citizen born in the Dominican Republic, who was a “lone wolf” terrorist and recent convert to Islam who planned to use pipe bombs to target police officers, post offices and service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, officials say.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Jose Pimentel, 27, a resident of Washington Heights, Manhattan was arrested Saturday after being under investigation since 2009. Pimentel was described as “calm” during court proceedings Sunday night, on WABC. He moved to the U.S. from The Dominican Republic when he was eight and is unemployed, WABC reported.

City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said investigators “had to act quickly” because the man had begun assembling three pipe bombs.

“The suspect was a so-called lone wolf, motivated by his own resentment of the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Bloomberg said at a news conference. “He was not part of a larger conspiracy emanating from abroad.”

Bloomberg said Pimentel represents the type of threat FBI Director Robert Mueller has warned about as U.S. forces erode the ability of terrorists to carry out large scale attacks, according to the Associated Press.

Kelly said Pimentel was inspired by and a follower of Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S.-born al-Qaeda leader who operated out of Yemen and was killed in late September by a U.S. drone attack, USA Today reported.

Al-Awlaki, who once preached at a mosque in Virginia, had fled to Yemen and had become an eloquent advocate for waging an Islamic war against the United States, USA Today reported. The U.S. held him responsible for inspiring Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan’s deadly shooting at Fort Hood in Texas in November 2009 and a young Nigerian’s scheme to blow up a U.S. jet on Christmas Day 2009.

Kelly said Pimentel came under investigation because of comments about violence to others. “He made some of his like-minded friends nervous because of his extremism,” Kelly said.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said Pimentel was charged Sunday with conspiring to build a bomb for terrorist purposes and possession of a pipe bomb.
