Brooklyn Woman, Delores Gillespie, 64, Burns To Death in Elevator After Man Sets Her on Fire

UPDATE Sunday December 18th 9:04 a.m.: A man suspected of setting Delores Gillespie on fire Saturday afternoon turned himself into police overnight, the AP reports. The 47-year-old man made statements implicating himself in her death and police sources tell the AP he smelled of gasoline.

A 64-year-old Brooklyn woman was killed Saturday afternoon after a masked man dressed as an exterminator sprayed her with a flammable liquid and set her on fire inside her apartment building elevator at 203 Underhill Avenue in Prospect Heights, according to multiple media reports.

Delores Gillespie had just returned home from shopping and was getting off the elevator on the 5th floor when the attacker began spraying her a flammable substance, according to the NY Daily News.

Police are still searching for the suspect and the New York Times reports that police are searching local hospitals because the man appears to have burned his face and hands during the attack.

The man sprayed her directly in the face and continued to spray her “sort of methodically,” over her head and parts of her body, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told the Associated Press.

At some point, Browne told the AP, the suspect then pulled out a barbeque-style lighter and lighted a rag inside a bottle and after a few seconds used the flames to set Gillespie afire.

Gillespie was pronounced dead at the scene, and NYPD spokesman Paul Brown told the NY Daily News that the killer is “known to the victim.”

“I’ve never seen any s–t like this, and I’ve been doing this a long time,” a detective told the NY Daily News.

The brutal attack lasted about a minute and was caught on camera – two video cameras including one inside the elevator, the AP reports. Residents of the six-story building were evacuated for hours.
