Video: “I Might Have Tacos”: East Haven, Conn. Mayor Joe Maturo’s Outreach Plan After 4 Cops Arrested For Racially Profiling Latinos
Federal authorities announced the arrest of four police officers in East Haven, Conn., accused of a series of offenses against Latinos which make up about 10 percent of the community.
Comments made by the Mayor of East Haven, Joe Maturo, to WPIX-TV’s Mario Diaz were surprising when he said he “might have tacos” as his first step to repair relations with the Latino community.

On Tuesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Sgt. John Miller and three of his officers — David Cari, Dennis Spaulding and Jason Zullo — on charges of conspiracy, false arrest, excessive force and obstruction of justice over what the indictment described as years of mistreatment of individuals, especially Hispanics, and efforts to cover it up, the New York Times reported.
When WPIX’s Diaz asked the Mayor about his plans for outreach in the Latino community, Maturo responded with a racially-charged response.
“I might have tacos when I go home. I’m not quite sure yet,” he mockingly responded.
Maturo later attempted to soften the insult by adding that he’s visited Puerto Rico, and since he’s Italian he may have spaghetti.
The mayor later tried to apologize for his comments, claiming his response to a simple question was taken “out of context.”
