Mother’s Pending Deportation May Have Motivated Hollywood Arson Suspect, Harry Burkhart, 24
Police have arrested a suspect in the 54 car fires in and around the Hollywood area, according to KTLA, and immigration may have motivated the alleged arsonist.
The suspect is Harry Burkhart, 24, a German national and a resident of the Hollywood area. He was booked Monday on arson charges and is being held without bail.
Authorities believe his mother’s pending deportation may have motivated Burkhart to set the fires in Hollywood, West Hollywood and the Valley. Burkhart went on an anti-American tirade during his mother’s recent immigration hearing.
“An arrest is not a prosecution,” LAPD Chief Beck said in a news conference Monday evening. “A prosecution is not a conviction. We are very confident in this arrest, but we have a long way to go and I think it’s important the media and the public recognize that.”
Beck also said that authorities’ “huge concern” now is whether Burkhart acted alone. He said investigators are still at work, and “are acting as if [Burkhart] did not act alone.”
