Walmart Mexico’s Earthquake Tweet Sparks Online Outrage

Screen shot 2012 03 20 at 10.23.48 PM Walmart Mexicos Earthquake Tweet Sparks Online OutrageA 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico Tuesday and soon after the quake, Walmart Mexico tweeted to its 8,827 followers: “Now we really made other stores shake with our prices.”

What were they thinking?

The Tweet, from the @WalmartComMx account, was deleted soon after being posted, but not before someone took a screenshot that was posted on Univision’s Facebook wall earlier today. People sounded off in the comments section with the majority posting negative comments.

“Obvio, mala publicidad y bien tonto la persona que escribio este tweet,” wrote Maria Moreno Nossa.

German Sebastian Amezcua commented, “Trying to be clever; I said “trying”…. FAILING!”

The person responsible for the Tweet is a contractor, according to Walmart’s International Corporate Affairs Manager, Erica Jones in an email statement to Dos Lives. When asked for comment, Jones referred to a message that was posted Tuesday afternoon on the company’s Mexico Twitter account:

“We regret the lack of sensitivity in writing the previous tweet. We are taking your comments into account so as to avoid this from happening again.”

The Twitter account took the next several hours responding to upset Twitter users and apologizing to individuals for the mistake over 29 different Tweets.

If you were Walmart, what would you do?
