The Expendables 2: A chat with action star Terry Crews
DosLives had a chance to talk with action star Terry Crews about his role in The Expendables 2 and what is was like working with Hollywood’s biggest action stars.
The Expendables 2 stars action movie royalty: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews and Randy Couture. It is the highly anticipated sequel to the summer 2010 worldwide box-office success.
DosLives: Thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. Everyone is really excited about The Expendables 2 sequel. How did you decide to sign on for a second movie?
Terry Crews: The hype that started before the first movie came out was really incredible and there were rumblings about doing a sequel. I learned to keep my expectations reserved though because a lot of movies get hyped on the internet. Until it comes out and you have a real hit, you don’t know about doing sequel. The Expendables was a huge worldwide hit and we knew it was time to re-up. Filming the first movie was the best experience. I would have done for free.
DL: Don’t let the studio hear you say that!
TC: I know! My agent and my wife would have killed me! But The Expendables is just that kind of movie. It’s the movie you dream about doing as an actor. To be in a real movie doing it with the biggest and the best makes me one of the very fortunate few.
DL: Speaking of the biggest and best, what was it like working with such big action stars, some for a second time and some new additions?
TC: I had only just gotten over the experience of the first movie. Working with these guys was incredible. I used to watch all of the Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. In this film, they are not only back for a second time, but then you add on Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris. I always knew Chuck was the real deal.
DL: Being such a big fan, was it intimidating to work with them?
TC: I felt like the luckiest guy in the world. I really wanted to come and bring the heat. You don’t want to be the weak link in this movie. I worked out twice a day. I didn’t have a stunt double a lot of times because I’m hard to double so there were a lot of stunts that I had to do. It was great.
DL: Does it get competitive between all of you on set in terms of who gets to do the best stunts?
TC: There are certain stunts they won’t let you do for insurance reasons, but it did get competitive. You want to have your moment. Sylvester Stallone and Simon West (the director) gave everyone their chance to shine.
DL: How is The Expendables 2 different from the first one?
TC: This movie is a lot funnier. I would call it more of a fun action adventure than a dark action movie. There is a lot of comedy involved. These guys make fun of themselves and are very good at it. They don’t take themselves too seriously. I’m not allowed to make fun of them, but when they joke on each other, it is hilarious.
DL: What exotic locations did you get to shoot in this time?
TC: We shot in Bulgaria, New Orleans and Hong Kong. Bulgaria was really nice. They opened up the whole country for us and we basically blew it up. But the best place we filmed was Hong Kong. It was awesome to watch Jet Li film his scenes there.
DL: You grew up in a small town called Flint, Michigan that doesn’t have the best reputation. Growing up in such a tough place, what does it mean to you to be a movie star and be working such Hollywood legends?
TC: When you look at the statistics, and where I should have ended up, its jail. A lot of my friends are in prison, have passed away or are just stuck. It never gets past me how fortunate I am. It also reminds me that you have to show people that you belong here. That is one thing I learned from Sly, Arnold, Bruce Lee and Chuck. They are really all about the work. You aren’t entitled to any career and you aren’t entitled to be a star. You really have to give everything and you still aren’t guaranteed a hit, but that’s what makes it so much more special when it hits. And The Expendables seems to have hit really really big.
The Expendables 2 is in theaters Friday, August 17. Watch the trailer below.Tell us what you think in the comments below or on:
