nyuevacuatiosn NYU Hospital Evacuated after Backup Generators Fail During OutageNew York University Langone Medical Center-Tisch Hospital was being evacuated Monday night, after backup power generators failed during an outage in Manhattan caused by Sandy.

Dozens of ambulances lined up to transfer about 215 patients from the Midtown East hospital to nearby Mount Sinai Memorial Sloan-Kettering and the Hospital for Joint Diseases.

CBS 2 reported that there are no elevators in the building and many patients are being carried down stairs.

The patients, who were in adult critical care, pediatric critical care, neonatal intensive care and obstretrics, are being accompanied by Langone staff and physicians, reported NBC New York.

Most residents below 39th Street had no electricity.

    Who designed the backup generator system? Without knowing any of the details why it failed, I still think that whoever designed the generator system, must have been naive not to include severe storm conditions in the region. I mean, this is not the first time that a hurricane strength storm hit NY. 
    Maybe the hospital was just lucky at those times.
