Teletón was born in Chile in 1978 when Mario Kreutzberger (Don Francisco) created and hosted the first Teletón telecast, mirroring the legendary MDA telethons hosted by Jerry Lewis in the United States. The enormous success of the Chilean Teletón led other Latin American countries to adopt the format, resulting in the establishment of Teletón Foundations throughout the region. Today, the Teletón is held in 13 Latin American nations—Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico—and has become one of the world’s largest voluntary aid organizations.
In 2012, Fundación Teletón (Teletón Foundation) launched “TeletónUSA,”a fundraising event for the benefit of children with disabilities, cancer, and autism in the United States. Leveraging Univision’s multiple platforms and unparalleled connection with the U.S. Hispanic community, “TeletónUSA” aims to raise millions of dollars for the construction of a rehabilitation center in the U.S.
