Why are Mexicans fearful of 2010?

Screen shot 2010-01-10 at 9.38.25 PMAren’t you excited for the 2010 – a new year and a new decade! Well, if you’re Mexican you just may be a little fearful as the year begins. Why? Because 2010 is Mexico’s bicentennial and Mexican history doesn’t have a good track record for this year.  The start of the Mexican Revolution started in 1910 during Mexico’s centennial. A century earlier in 1810 was the start of Mexico’s War of Independence.

What are some possible calamities that could happen this year for our friends south of the border? Check you this interesting Time.com article for the full scoop.

New Year’s Day Census Bureau predictions for U.S. Population

U.S. CensusOur friends at the Census Bureau have released some New Year’s Day predictions. They predict that on Jan. 1, 2010 — three months out from Census Day — the total U.S. population will be 308,400,408. This would represent an increase of 2,606,181, or 0.9 percent, from New Year’s Day 2009.

Net international migration is expected to add one person every 37 seconds to the U.S. population in January 2010, resulting in an increase in the total U.S. population of one person every 14 seconds, yep every 14 seconds.

In January 2010, one birth is expected to occur every eight seconds in the United States and one death every 12 seconds.

Are you ready to be counted?

Also, our team just saw this Census-related article from Poder360.com and encourage you to check out their entire site. Lots of good stuff!

Yo Quiero Taco Bell…and umm…Weight Loss?

Remember Jared the big guy from the Subway ads who ate his way to a healthy weight with the help of subway sandwiches? Well, meet Christine Dougherty (She’s the one holding a taco) who lost 54 pounds driving to Taco Bell and ordering from their low-fat “Fresco” menu. I don’t think Gidget, Taco Bell’s former four-legged spokesman ever ate from this menu. He would have preferred some Volcano Nachos with a big Chalupa.

It’s all part of Taco Bell’s English-language Drive-Through Diet campaign (www.drivethroughdiet.com). The Taco Bell Web site in Spanish doesn’t mention anything about the campaign.

You can watch a quick video of Chistine share her story and see a few too many pictures of Christine in her bathing suite. It did take Christine two years to lose the 54 pounds and according to the Web site (which has many disclaimers) she also made other sensible choices and she notes that “These results aren’t typical.”

Click below to get the link to the free Fresco Taco coupon and also to see our beloved Gidget in one his commercials.

Mexicans no longer have to cross border for laundry detergent

Your Local Washateria

Your Local Washateria

There’s one less reason for Mexicans living in the U.S. to cross the border gracias a laundry detergent maker.

Mexicans used to using the powdered laundry detergent brand Ariel can now find it here in the U.S. and it’s even in their preferred bagged version as opposed to the popular cardboard box preferred by most U.S. consumers, according to an FT.com article.

If you’re not into Ariel there is also a new bagged version of Gain detergent.

“You’ve got people going across the border and they need to understand that the brand that they know and love is available on both sides.” Said Bob McDonald, P&G’s  (company who makes the laundry detergents) new chief executive .

Do you  have a preference between liquid and powder and if you’re into powder do you like it bagged or boxed?

California launches Web site to attract more…MEXICANS!

VisitaCalifornia“CALIFORNIA TRAVEL AND TOURISM COMMISSION LAUNCHES WEBSITE TO HELP LURE MORE MEXICANS TO CALIFORNIA.” No, we didn’t make this headline up. This is the actual headline from a California Travel and Tourism Commission press release released this week.

Does California really need to launch a new Web site to “lure” more Mexicans to the Golden State? Last time we checked California didn’t seem to have a problem getting Mexicans to cross the border.

Well , according to this organization, that forty-nine percent of Mexicans visiting the U.S. visited California in 2008, spending $1 billion in the state. Overnight visitors stayed an average of 7.2 nights. What about the ones that never left? Did that throw off their average?

According to the California Travel Tourism Commission  the Web site, www.VisitaCalfornia.com.mx is “…part of one of the ways we hope to make planning a California dream vacation easier and more compelling to this important market,” said Caroline Beteta, CTTC president & CEO and chair of the U.S. Travel Association.

Merry Pepsi Mexican Christmas Tree

00arbol12

Merry Pepsi Christmas from Mexico! The Pepsi tree was lit tonight in Mexico City and it’s setting a record at 367 feet tall, beating out Brazil’s tree for the world record.

Dos Lives has the pictures from tonight’s festivities which included 600 strobe lights and also how this megaárbol looks during the day with it’s red, white and blue background.

Pepsi may be sponsoring this tree, but Coca-Cola Co. will light 50 of its own Christmas trees in Chapultepec Park in Mexico City on Sunday.

Random fact that Beverage Digest says Coca-Cola holds 69 percent of Mexico’s carbonated soft drink market compared to Pepsi’s 16 percent, according to a Yahoo article. So does that mean that Mexicans will leave a Coke for Papa Noel?

Where do Latinos connect with the éne-bé-a (NBA) Online?

NBA EspanolThe NBA has announced a new season-long campaign targeting Hispanics on both Spanish and English-language media.  As I was taking a look at the new Spanish-language section of the  NBA Web site (www.nba/enebea.com), I noticed they are connecting with Latinos on several social networking sites including QuePasa, Facebook and MySpace. I was curious. Where do they have the most fans?  Well, the top result probably doesn’t surprise anyone; it’s Facebook with over 200,000 fans and the majority of the comments are in Spanish.

Do you remember the last time you checked your MySpace account? What about your QuePasa account? Do you even have a QuePasa account to check? Well,QuePasa has MySpace beat at least with regards to NBA fans.

The NBA could step it up on their Twitter channel with only 112 followers in three months. How do you connect with the NBA online? Do you connect in English, Spanish or both?  Leave a comment and let us know.
